Publisher's Summary:

James Baldwin discusses his views on the many racial and aesthetic issues embodied in his essays and fiction - including the role of the artist in Western culture - in this 1984 interview, given when he was teaching at Amherst, Massachusetts. The oldest of 9 children, Baldwin began as a teenage evangelist after a religious crisis, precipitated by the discovery that his father was not his biological parent. Later, he was befriended by Richard Wright - author of Native Son - and at age 24, followed Wright's lead and moved to Paris to gain needed distance from America's racial climate. Baldwin counted 7 novels, 5 volumes of essays, 3 plays, and 2 collections of short fiction among his important writings. He continued to live abroad until his death in 1987.
