Publisher's Summary:

Do world events have a place in fiction? Deborah Treisman moderates this New Yorker Festival event featuring Edwidge Danticat, Dave Eggers, Cynthia Ozick, and Orhan Pamuk.

Deborah Treisman became the fiction editor of The New Yorker last year.

Edwidge Danticat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and grew up in Brooklyn. She is the author of the short-story collection Krik? Krak! and the novels Breath, Eyes, Memory, The Farming of Bones, and The Dew Breaker. She is the editor of The Butterfly's Way: Voices from the Haitian Dyaspora in the United States.

Dave Eggers is the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, You Shall Know Our Velocity!, and How We Are Hungry. He is working on a biography of Dominic Arou, a "Lost Boy" refugee from Sudan who lives in Atlanta. In 2002, he founded 826 Valencia, a writing lab for San Francisco youth.

Cynthia Ozick's many books of fiction, essays, and criticism include The Shawl, The Pagan Rabbi and Other Stories, Quarrel & Quandary, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism, and, most recently, Heir to the Glimmering World. The title story of The Shawl was first published in The New Yorker and was the first story to be awarded the Rea Award for the Short Story. Her New Yorker essay "Who Owns Anne Frank?" received the 1998 National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticism.

Orhan Pamuk, whose work has been translated into more than 20 languages, is Turkey's best-selling novelist. An English translation of his most recent book, Snow, was released in the U.S. in August. His other books include The White Castle, which won the 1990 Independent Award for Foreign Fiction, The Black Book, The New Life, and My Name is Red.
